City thanks residents for helping shape a cleaner Cape Town

STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S MAYORAL COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR URBAN WASTE MANAGEMENT, ALDERMAN GRANT TWIGG   

The City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate extends heartfelt thanks to all residents who participated in the 2024 City of Cape Town Household Survey. Your valuable input helps us track progress in improving waste services and guides future planning to ensure every household enjoys a cleaner and healthier community.           

The survey results show that over 84% of households across Cape Town reported receiving regular refuse collection. In formal areas, over 97% of households reported that they benefited from weekly services, while more work is needed to improve services in informal settlements, despite the challenging operating conditions, including hijackings and attacks on our frontline staff.

These findings align with our commitment, as outlined in our Waste Strategy 2025, to prioritise improvements in waste collection for informal settlements, backyard dwellings, and small-scale rental units. The strategy recognises that these fast-growing communities face unique challenges, including density and limited infrastructure, and commits to practical solutions that bring dignity, health, and cleaner communities for all residents.

Improving waste collection in informal settlements is at the heart of our Waste Strategy. Every load of waste collected represents a cleaner street, a healthier community, and a step toward a city where everyone can live with dignity. We thank residents for their cooperation and for helping us understand where we can do more.

Our Waste Strategy outlines clear actions to strengthen existing services, expand community-based collection initiatives, and reduce illegal dumping, particularly in vulnerable areas. With continued resident feedback and partnership, we aim to ensure that every community is part of a cleaner, more inclusive Cape Town.
